The mayor met with City Health Office (CHO) officials led by Dr. Ma. Carmela Gensoli, Dr. Rodolfo Dumayas Jr. of the Department of Health (DOH)-Development Management Office in Bacolod; the Department of Education (DepEd) Bacolod City Division led by schools division superintendent Cynthia Demavivas, and several department heads of Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) led by Dr. Mary Johnson Cabaluna.
On Friday, Oct. 14, about 100 pupils of Handumanan Elementary School 1 were admitted to various hospitals in the city due to suspected food poisoning.
All in all, there have been 145 patients admitted from Friday to Sunday [Oct. 16] but at least 11 patients had already been discharged, Gensoli said.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environmental Sanitation Division, said the situation is called a “food and waterborne diseases outbreak” as the illnesses were possibly caused by the food and water ingested by the victims. It is considered an “outbreak” given the big number of cases, she added.
But Tan clarified they are still awaiting the laboratory results of the stool examinations in order to specifically determine the cause/s of the illnesses.
Gensoli said they conducted water sampling from four sources in the area, including the source of ice used in juices that were sold to the students, for bacteriological examination.
Gensoli said the CHO-Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit also already got samples of fruit juices and food sold by ambulant vendors for sampling.
Classes in Handumanan Elementary Schools I and II have been suspended on Friday until today, Monday.
