Ati-Atihan fest features ‘bigger, exciting’ events

With two months to go, volunteers of Kalibo Ati-Atihan festival are in the thick of final preparations of festivities to honor and pay homage to Senor Sto. Nino from January 6 to 15, 2017.

Ati-Atihan in Kalibo, Aklan is celebrated in nine days which is famous for its religious worship and tourism activities. 

The “Mother of All Philippine Festivals” kicks off the festivities with the nine-day devotional novena, community vigils and parish visitations of Senor Santo Nino and the traditional ‘Paeapak’ on January 6. 

Albert Menez, chairperson of Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi), said sixteen Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan candidates will also compete for the crown and title in the grand finale at ABL Sports and Cultural Center at 7 p.m. 

Festival-goers for the Air Asia Red Hot Party Kalibo 2017 will party all-night on January 7 at Kalibo Pastrana Park while Sikad Karera for bike enthusiasts will take place at 7 a.m.  on January 8 followed by car show, bikers rally, Ati-Atihan fun run in the afternoon.

The Hala Bira Ati-Atihan nights with several Pinoy rock bands performing their acts on stage will be held starting January 9 at Kalibo Magsaysay Park. 

Aklan Visual Arts Exhibit at Museo it Akean, Aklan Street Bazaar along Veterans Avenue, Kaean-an sa Plaza and Aklan Products Showcase at Kalibo Pastrana Park will also open on January 9 and will run through January 15.

SangKalibong Tamboe and Ati-Atihan float parade will take place on January 9 and the ‘Pagdayaw kay Senor Sto. Nino” of various schools and colleges will be held on January 10 along the major streets of Kalibo. 

In addition to various events, there will be a Sarok film fest festival on January 9 to 15 for videographers, film makers and budding artists to shoot the cultural, religious celebration of Ati-Atihan festival.  

Students and teachers will also compete in Sinaot sa Calle it mga Magueang ag Inungang Ati of Department of Education-Division of Aklan on January 11 and 12 while Aklan Higante Contest featuring the ‘Higantes’ of different municipalities is scheduled in the afternoon of January 12.

Meanwhile, the whole-day Sadsad Pasaeamat kay Senor Sto. Nino of devotees and revelers on January 13 kicks off the ‘Big Three Days” leading to the grand celebration. 

On January 14, a dawn penitential procession will signalled the start of Bisperas it Kapistahan ni Senor Sto. Nino at 4 a.m. followed by the must-see Sadsad Ati-Atihan street dancing contest at 8 a.m. along the major streets of Kalibo.

Thousands of devotees and visitors will also witness the transfer of Sto. Nino de Kalibo image at 6:30 a.m. before the concelebrated Pilgrims Mass at Cathedral Parish of St. John the Baptist grounds at around 7 a.m. on January 15. 

At 2 p.m. throng of devotees clutching their Santo Nino images and merrymakers with their caros will join the religious procession-dance.


The festival organizer will also announce the Ati-Atihan street dancing contest winners at 9 p.m. at Kalibo Magsaysay Park on January 15.
