Kalibo frat gang members signed peace accord

Hostile fraternity gangs signed a peace covenant with the local police and municipal officials on December 17 to end fraternity-related violence in Barangay Poblacion in the capital town of Kalibo.

The police condemned the instances of violence in C. Laserna, a densely populated area of Barangay Poblacion along the Aklan River bank involving frat gang members that resulted to injuries and deaths.

Aside from Kalibo mayor William Lachica, Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, members of Kalibo municipal police station advisory council and purok leaders of C. Laserna area also joined the so-called peace solutions among frat gang members.

Sta. Ana said the initiative of the Kalibo police station aims to seek reconciliation, establish harmonious ties and to maintain peace and order in the community.

“The frat gangs and their purok leaders agreed to refrain from initiating frat wars, abstain from doing illegal activities and committing petty crimes,” the covenant stated.

For their part, the Kalibo police force will also continue to educate the youths and to create programs and activities to promote their well-being and enhance the capabilities of frat gang members.

After the covenant signing, the frat gang members and the local officials also had a symbolic boodle fight to signify unity and camaraderie.

Also in attendance were Kalibo deputy chief Senior Inspector Honey Mae Ruiz, Sangguniang Bayan member Buen Joy French, Barangay Poblacion kagawad Kim Melgarejo and Kalibo municipal police station advisory council chairman Augusto Tolentino.
