“Chef Ati” took home the grand prize of P45,000 from the provincial government of Aklan. The Higante of Balete showcased the “Chef” small kitchen with herb garden while demonstrating how to cook a turkey.
Dressed in white ala-Kusina master chef Pablo ‘Boy’ Logro, the Higante is also “good at conserving and championing the preservation of local dishes such as inubarang manok (native chicken simmered in coconut milk), tinumkan (pounded freshwater cryfish wrapped in taro leaves and cooked in coconut milk) and binakoe (native chicken in young bamboo culm) using the traditional recipes.
“Nars nga Ati” of the town of Tangalan came in second for P40,000 while “Aura Bombero” of New Washington settled for third place for P35,000.
Other winners were Doktor nga Ati it Batangnon (Batan) in fourth place for P30,000 and Seafarer Ati (Ibajay), fifth place, P25,000.
Consolation winners were the capital town of Kalibo for its Higante entry Modelo nga Ati; Datu Manduyog, ang Musikero (Banga); VIctorino Mapa, the lawyer (Malinao); Politiko nga Ati (Nabas) and Engineer nga Ati (Numancia). The entries received P15,000 each.
The theme of Higante Contest “Professional Ati” focused on profession or job that conforms to standards and person’s competence.
The Higantes made of giant paper-mache participating in Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan festival in Kalibo, Aklan are open to 17 municipalities in Aklan. Subsidies of P30,000 are allocated by the provincial government of Aklan for registered entries.
