Want to witness a musician, lawyer, seaman, doctor, model, nurse and politician, but dressed in colourful paper-mache ‘Higantes’?
Get an up-close view as 10 Higante entries are competing for grand prizes of the Aklan Higante Contest, one of the must-see events of Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Festival on January 12.
“Professional Ati” is this year’s contest theme which depicts the profession or job that conforms to standards and the person’s competence.
Banga (Datu Manduyog ang Musikero), Ibajay (Seafarer Ati), Batan (Doktor nga Ati it Batangnon), Kalibo (Model nga Ati), Tangalan (Nars nga Ati), Nabas (Politiko nga Ati) and Malinao (Victorino Mapa, Lawyer) are ‘invading’ the Ati-Atihan town of Kalibo.
Other ‘Higante’ entries are the towns of Balete, Numancia and New Washington.
The grand ‘Higante’ champion will receive P45,000; P40,000 for second place and P35,000 for third place. The 4th placer will take home P30,000 and 5th placer to get P25,000 while the non-winning ‘Higantes” will receive P15,000.
Prizes and subsidy of P30,000 each for participating ‘Higantes” are sponsored by the provincial government of Aklan.
The Higantes, merrymakers and municipal government employees will assemble at Desposorio Maagma, Sr. Street at around 1 p.m. for the parade along Mabini Street to Kalibo Pastrana Park.
Winners will be judged during the ‘Higante’ parade based on uniqueness and creativeness, artistry, relevance and adherence of the figure and design to contest theme, audience and impact.
The awarding of ‘Higante’ winners will be held at Kalibo Pastrana Park, according to Provincial Tourism Officer Roselle Ruiz.
