No rehab? ‘spaghetti wires’ to stay in Kalibo

Remember the ‘spaghetti wires’ in overhead poles in the town of Kalibo, Aklan? If no efforts to rehabilitate the dangling wires, for sure, they are here to stay for good.

Five years after the enactment of Ordinance No. 2011-016, the unsightly wires of utility companies and cable networks are still 'eyesores' in the streets.

Kalibo councilor Phillip Kimpo said these dangling wires pose great risk to human life and properties that have also a negative impact on Kalibo’s tourism industry and future developments.

Kimpo said the legislative body noticed the companies failed to “rehabilitate their installations and untangle the wires” five years after the enactment of municipal ordinance.

At present, the Bureau of Telecommunications (Butelco) also had a number of still-standing posts and cable lines in downtown Kalibo.

To address the messy wires, the Sangguniang Bayan has asked the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to grant the municipal government of Kalibo for the removal of Butelco posts and cable lines along Mabini Street up to Osmena Avenue.

On December 9, telephone and cable companies such as Aklan Cable Television Company, Panay Telephone Company, Cruztelco, Kalibo Cable Television Network and telecommunication companies will also meet to update the councilors of their ‘rehabilitation’ efforts.

Kimpo, who chairs the committee on  tourism, promotions and special events, said the telcos and cable companies will prioritize the bundling of wires along the Ati-Atihan festival route for the safety of revelers and residents.

In year 2011, the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo enacted Ordinance 2011-016 which require the companies to rehabilitate their telecommunications, cables, power and electrical lines.

Further, they must submit quarterly status reports of their rehabilitation works after the end of each quarter.
