Malay, Malinao MDRRMCs top Gawad Kalasag 6 awards

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) of Malay Aklan was declared best in 1st-3rd class category in the annual Gawad Kalasag (Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan) regional awarding ceremony on December 7 in Iloilo City.

Office of Civil Defense 6 regional director Rosario Cabrera bestowed the plaque of recognition and the P50,000 cash prize to Malay town mayor Ceciron Cawaling. Joining him were Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers (BFRAV) founder Rear Admiral Leonard Tirol and Executive Assistant IV and MDRRMO officer-in-charge Rowen Aguirre,\.

BFRAV was also declared as Best Private Volunteer Organization. The 24/7 fire and medical response group intends to buy additional medical assets from the P50,000 cash prize to augment its facilities.

MDRRMC of Malinao, Aklan also won first place for 4th-6th class category and the Special Operation Unit (SOU) of Kalibo, Aklan for Best Government Emergency Response Management (Advance Search and Rescue).

Kalibo mayor William Lachica and MDRRMO officer Nino Carmelo Carmen of Malinao, Aklan received the plaques of recognition and the cash prizes from Cabrera.

The province of Aklan, meanwhile, placed third in Best Provincial DRRMC category along with the province of Capiz in first place and the province of Guimaras came in second.

The volunteer groups and LGUS were recognized for their “exemplary performance through strong linkages with stakeholders by having imbibed sustainability in the implementation of preparedness and resiliency in pursuit of excellence in the field of disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance.

The “Search for Excellence in Disaster Risk and Reduction Management and Humanitarian Assistance 2016” is a mechanism to obtain the commitment and support of LGUS, civil society organizations and major stockholders by recognizing their exceptional contributions.
